Yesterday i spent five hours on a bus with my friends and we made our way five hours north to a little city called Santander. i had never heard of Santander before, but thanks to a woman at my language school and Pinterest, here i am.
Santander is on the Northern Coast of Spain, framed by the Atlantic Ocean and dense with hills and mountains. Honestly, i've never seen anything like it. i'm from the beach, but my little beach town looks nothing like Santander. The water looks like jewels and the cliffs are unreal. It didn't take me long to fall in love with it.
We stayed in an Airbnb, courtesy of our host Juan José. The walls were painted the colors of fire and the furniture matched. But it was perfect. We had a home for our adventure. We had a place to rest and cook (we made eggs!! Spanish people don't eat scrambled eggs!!). We had beds and a place to call our own why we ventured into the unknown.
This morning, we slept in and made a hot breakfast and eased our way into the day. After lunch we left, seeking out a lighthouse and trusting that Ben's phone would get us where we needed to go. We walked up vicious hills and wandered away from our path to see the beach (Good news: it wasn't nude). After too many hills, unexpected heat, and questions about the lighthouse we couldn't see, we made it. And our jaws dropped.
It's impossible to recount what i saw, but i can tell you this: our God is magnificent. Through all the beauty, the cliffs and the wildflowers and succulents and the ocean and the friends, i stood in awe of my Maker. He made creation so show us Himself, to show us His love, to make us smile. And let me tell you: it worked. We were able to stand there and wander and feel the breeze, remind us of our God's presence. It was unreal.
Our first day in Santander has been a dance of delight. We walked so much but we laughed even more. We stood too close to the edge of cliffs and we sat with wide eyes as we looked at the Atlantic ocean. It was beautiful. And it was perfect. And it was Jesus.
Advice: Go to places you've never heard of with people that love you well. You won't regret it.
